How Lady Luck Learned to Play Casino Craps

April 23rd, 2009

Not too long ago, casino craps was very much branded as a "boys' game." The players were male and so were the casino craps dealers. That male exclusivity has changed, and I was part of that change when, in 1995, I moved to Las Vegas from my hometown of Mt. Pleasant, MI. Before moving across the country, I had been a blackjack dealer at the Soaring Eagle before deciding to raise the stakes and go see the elephant, so to speak.

During my first weeks in Sin City, I perused many casinos and I saw that no women were dealing the craps games. This instantly added to my curiosity about craps, which I had played a few times and was still scratching my head over what had happened. I gathered that dealing craps was for men only, which only made the idea of being a craps dealer enticing.

I soon decided that I wanted to enter the boys' club, and I was off to dealer school and signed up for a craps course. I studied hard and went to practice every evening and three weeks later was set up for my first job audition at the infamous El Cortez in downtown Las Vegas.

El Cortez was considered the best place to break into craps because it had three low limit dice tables, starting at a quarter, as in $0.25, on the line with two bits odds. Needless to say, this was a busy place with layouts stuffed with bets and a proposition box that teemed like a Manhattan street at lunch time. This was the notorious El Cortez "bird game" that was supposed to teach you how to deal the bigger games at nicer places where players bet in $25 units.

I was so nervous for my audition. To get a dealer job you have to audition on a live game. Lots of gaming companies have screening and interviewing processes for job applicants — some don't, but it all boils down to getting on a game and showing the pit boss you can deal. It's the only way to truly judge if the person can work a game.

The July evening I went for my audition it was 112 degrees out and I was dressed in the appropriate long-sleeved white dress shirt and black slacks. On a side note, I'd trade a Las Vegas summer for a Michigan winter any day. I felt like I would turn to ashes in the heat as my nerves stoked my furnace of anxiety, but I really needed the job. I was so broke that putting money in the parking meter was even a hardship and I went in to my audition.

The game was busy and I was told to go in on stick. Everyone was looking at me, pit staff and players alike. Then the players began to exclaim about the aberration of a women dealing the game. People called me bad luck and jeered as I started to move the dice with the awful awkward shaking slowness that every wannabe craps dealer exhibits the first time on a live game. A couple players took down their bets. I would later learn that players often stop betting when a dealer, man or woman, is auditioning. Bad luck you know. But that was fine. I focused on dealing, doing what I was taught. I moved the dice with a painful lack of style, navigating the pass line bets and don't pass bets and crossing a crowd of field bets thick as cow pies in an overused pasture.

I got the job and started the next day. My pit boss, Tony, had a private conversation with me about being the only woman in the pit and he didn't want any problems. Apparently this meant I was a problem, but I told him there wouldn't be any problems.

I proceeded over the next few months to learn to be a competent dealer. As a woman, there was a lot of pressure to prove myself capable. Although most of my fellow dealers were nice, some even becoming my friends, there was an underlying animosity toward my presence from the pit boss and boxmen. I was supposed to fail. So I paid attention on game and, at all times, I tried to be a better dealer than everyone else. After all, dealing craps is not some kind of lumberjack chainsaw juggling contest. Men and women can do it equally well.

The reaction among the other dealers and bosses to my presence was mixed. Most of the dealers were positive although they collectively asked me if I was married. They were disappointed when I said that I lived with my boyfriend. Overall, my fellow dealers were enthusiastic about my addition to the staff because it meant they could take days off.

One boxman in particular, Jim, was very old school and hostile to my presence. Jim called me a "skirt" so I called him "old." Casinos are very law of the jungle places and biting back when you get bit brings you respect. Jim sweetened up after that presumably because he didn't like having mean things said to him. And having a 23-year-old woman call you old is unpleasant for any man.

Eventually, Jim turned out to be very protective of me. Unfortunately, his old school style often meant that he would kick a player out of the casino for being too flirtatious with me. Still it was sweet, and I got over his initial discrimination mostly because he was a spear-waving demon to the male dealers. I had had it relatively easy.

Blackjack Rules and Strategy

Blackjack Rules

Basic Rules

The premise of Blackjack is to get 21 or be closer to it than the dealer without going over, or busting. You are not playing against any other players at the table, and the play of the dealer is determined by his own draw. So anyone seeing your cards is inconsequential, not to mention impossible when playing online because you're playing a computer.

The value of your hand is the sum of the cards. The Ace is worth either 1 or 11 (doesn't have to be specified, just assumed to be the value that makes the best hand). Jack, Queen, King and 10 are all worth 10. Number cards are, you guessed it, equal to the number on the card.

Blackjack Jargon

The first and most important distinction in blackjack is, the Blackjack, or Natural. A blackjack is 21 on the first two cards, an ace with a 10, J, Q, or K. Getting 21 with say 7, 5, 9 is 21, not blackjack. Blackjack has a higher payout than 21. Any time both the player and dealer blackjack it is a tie or Push.

After the initial two cards are dealt, if you'd like another card you may Hit. Once you are satisfied with your cards (you did play your hand to optimize your odds right?) you will Stand.

In addition to the original bet, you are allowed to increase your wager up to double after the first two cards have been dealt, and only after the first two cards are dealt. When you decide to Double Down you are dealt only a third card, so you should expect to be able to win the hand with only one more card. A prime example would be if you were dealt 5, 6, you have a fair chance of getting a card of value 10 and winning and the larger pot.

Should you be dealt a pair you have the option of Splitting. The two matching cards are separated and your bet for each hand is equal to the original bet, and each hand is played independently.

Casinos sometimes offer you an opportunity to opt out of a hand by giving up a portion of your wager. The aptly named Surrender comes in two forms, early and late. The late surrender allows you to opt out only after the dealer has checked his hand for blackjack. In the early form you can surrender before the dealer checks his hand for blackjack, giving the dealer a slightly smaller advantage. As you may expect, casinos are aware of this margin of advantage, thus you will rarely find a casino that offers early surrender.

The final betting alteration is Insurance. Insurance is offered when the first card the dealer gives himself is an ace. The insurance is for half of your wager and pays out 2:1. This is to 'protect' you from a dealer blackjack. Purchasing insurance is generally a poor choice and statistically you end up better off ignoring it. However, more advanced players can detect situations with a high likelihood that the dealer with blackjack thus taking advantage of the insurance.

Blackjack strategy

Before playing a hand you should know the context of the game which you are playing. This includes number of cards in the deck and how the dealers play is determined. These two points are important because, if you intend to win or at least optimize your odds, they will influence how you play.

The first fact you should not is how many decks of cards you will be playing from. More decks makes it more difficult to keep track of cards played, thus making it more difficult to speculate odds of cards coming up. For one deck you can simply mark cards played and see what remains. With multiple decks in play if you keep track of how many of each card has been played you will begin to get an advantage as the game progresses.

Slight variations in what determines the dealers play can have an impact on your decisions, therefore should be noted. There are two popular methods of laying out play. The most common method is the dealer stands on all 17s. All aces equal 11 unless it would make them bust. The variation is that the dealer stands on hard 17s and all 18s. This means that if the dealer has A, 6 (soft 17) he would still hit. If a 10 came up then the dealer would stand.

Above all, play with common sense and have a good time. Base your decisions on logic and you just might CrackTheCasino.

Casino Bonus - Fact or Fiction?

April 20th, 2009

Casino bonuses – what is up with this? Is somebody actually nice enough to give you money for free? Sure, and pigs fly!

You see, the people running online casinos are actually quite clever (no, don't laugh). They know that giving away an online casino bonus will not only attract more people to their casinos, but they will make money from it as well.

And don’t think that this is a new idea. Land based casinos all over the world have been using ″freebies″ to attract people to play at their casinos. Think about the free drinks, rooms, etc that casinos offer.

How can online casinos make money from giving away money ? Casino bonus deals are structured in such a way that you can only withdraw it from the casino after you played a number of hands/rolls/spins. The casinos know that few people will have any of the bonus amount left by the end of these hands/rolls/spins, never mind the full amount. Plus, they probably lost their own deposit in the process!

Most people that play at online casinos are either fun players or they don't have a strategy, or both! These people are the lifeblood of a casino, as they have no idea how to overcome the advantage the casino has over them.

Every casino game has a house edge (the average % of profit that a casino makes from a game). The only way to overcome the house edge is to enter the casino with a working strategy.

But let's get back to our discussion about casino bonuses.

Actually, for all the bad press, casino bonuses are quite useful. You won't get rich using them (unless you win the jackpot!), but armed with a bit of knowledge, it is an easy way to make some extra money.

Before you sign up with an online casino based on their newest casino bonus, you must read the terms and conditions regarding their promotions. Obviously all the terms and conditions are important, but you really want to check out the following 3 elements:

Wagering requirements

Simply put, this is the amount of money you have to wager before you can withdraw the bonus. This is normally expressed as a multiple of your deposit plus your bonus.

Example: The wagering requirement is 20x, you deposit $100 and get $100 bonus. Therefore, you have to wager a total of $4,000 before you can withdraw the $100 bonus. You can withdraw your deposit at any time.

Excluded games

Very important! Some games are excluded from fulfilling the wagering requirements. These are usually the games that have the lowest house edge, including Roulette, Craps and Blackjack and all their variants.

However, if you spend a little time and search around, you will find casinos that will include one or more of these games in the wagering requirements.

Withdrawal conditions

A few casinos have withdrawal conditions to withdraw the bonus. Even if you have fulfilled the wagering requirements, you still have to meet certain conditions. These might range from depositing a minimum amount of money to being able to withdraw your winnings only after you reached a certain amount.

These extra conditions mostly relate to free casino bonuses (where you do not have to deposit any money to get a casino bonus). But beware, there are some casinos where these conditions apply to the normal deposit match bonuses.

Strategy

In order to make a bit of money from online casino bonuses, you *have* to follow a proven strategy. Your goal is to get through the wagering requirements without losing too much of the bonus. That way you have your initial deposit plus a bonus amount which you can withdraw to make a nice profit.

Who knows, you might even have a very good system and make some profit on top of the casino bonus!

Good luck and start playing!

Laos Casinos

April 18th, 2009

Nestled between Thailand and Vietnam, Laos is one of the true jewels of Southeast Asia. Though some parts of it may not be as highly developed as its Indochina counterparts, there is one area where it has managed to keep up - casino gambling.

The Dansavanh Casino is located in Ban Muang Wa-Tha, Vientiane Province. This Laos casino brings in many jobs for the locals, who sometimes do not always have a chance to earn a living wage. The Dansavanh Casino is heavily reliant upon tourists in order to make money. Locals normally only work there and do not spend their wages on gambling. Because neighboring countries such as Thailand are littered with flashy, flamboyant casinos, Dansavanh Casino relies more on tourists from China, which borders Laos on the Northeastern tip (though they do get some Thai tourists in to gamble).

The Chinese government has always been very much against gambling, especially within its own borders. This is why places such as Laos can open up casinos and be instantly successful–gamblers from other countries. Because gambling is so taboo in China, the tourists flock to casinos in excitement to satisfy their curiosity, and they usually spend pretty big. Laos casinos have long benefited from this type of spending.

Recently, the Chinese government forbid their citizens to travel to other countries to gamble. This especially meant neighboring countries such as Thailand and Laos. Because Laos does rely so heavily on commerce with China for income, they agreed to enforce the ban. Though this greatly hurt the income of Dansavanh (amongst others), they are still open for tourists from other countries. It is also believed that many Chinese still come to Laos to gamble, but it is not always in big public Laos casinos, such as Dansavanh.

Casino gambling in Laos features many of the same games that you would find at any other casino around the world. Games such as blackjack, baccarat, roulette, slot machines, and video poker can be found in the casinos. You can even have private or public tables to play at, if you so desire.

Due to the beautiful resort communities and the ability to gamble within its borders, Laos will continue to be a force in the Southeast Asia tourist market. More beachfront properties and even resort casinos are in the planning and are likely to be opening in the near future. This provides not only entertainment, but also a source for jobs and government income for this underdeveloped nation.

Play Blackjack the Way Pros Do

April 16th, 2009

Plyaing Blackjack at a table in Las Vegas, Atlantics City, or even at a small rural casino can be an exciting and entertaining experience whether you’ve never played the game before or whether you’re a seasoned pro. However, for the first timers, a night spent at the blackjack table isn’t usually lucrative, and often ends with losing a sizable stack of chips. As they stumble through the basics of the game, their stack of chips gets smaller and smaller until it vanishes.

For the pros, the story is different. These are people who are so good at playing Blackjack that hey’re making money much faster than most amateurs lose it. What is an enjoyable but expensive recreation to others is another day at the office for a strategic player. How are they able to make so much money when you are not? The answer is simple. They’ve mastered the simple rules of Blackjack strategy, and you haven’t.

The secret that the casinos don’t want you to know is that it takes only a little bit of time and effort to learn these techniques yourself. With the proper guidance, you can quickly learn all you need to know to turn Blackjack into a money making operation. That is because, if playeed well, the odds in Blackjack actually favor the player, not the house. Casinos make money on the game simply because most people don’t know how to play Blackjack well.

First, you’ll have to know when to split, double down, and surrender. Surrendering is not an option at every casino, but it helps to know how to use it in case you find one where it is. If that sounded like Greek to you, don’t worry. It isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Splitting, doubling down, and surrendering are options available to you, the Blackjack player, that are not available to the dealer. That means that you’ve got at least two weapons that he or she doesn’t have! That sounds pretty good, but of course these weapons are only helpful once you know exactly when and how to make use of them.

In order to really win at Blackjack, you’ll also need to learn something about counting cards. This is the part that the casinos really don’t want you to know about, because if too many people figure out how to do it, those people will become such a draw on casino resources that they chould change the face of modern gambling houses. In fact, most of today’s casinos are banking on the hope that you won’t count cards at all. However, since counting cards basically consists of paying attention, it is not cheating, so there’s nothing they can do to stop you. You just need to continually be aware of what cards have already been dealt out. Again, with the right guidance, you can develop a system for keeping this information in your head. Then, using this information, you can make better guesses as to what cards you and the dealer are likely to be dealt, and you can make all your decisions accordingly. That’s really all there is to it. With the right stretegy, there’s nothing stopping you from making money hand over fist playing Blackjack!

A Trip To Vegas

April 16th, 2009

A trip that will always be remembered is the one in Las Vegas, what is sometimes referred to as ″Sin City″ due to it’s casino gambling places, though I prefer to remember it as a ″sensational″ city, LasVegas, Nevada.

From LA to this gambler’s city, It was a 4 hour drive during the summer months. The weather was exceptionally hot but such excitement filled the air. When my friends and I got to our casino Hotel, we were amazed by the kindness showed to us by the valet attendant as he welcomed us to the gambling and entertainment world, and wish for us a splendid stay and away we went to check in and start what ended up being the most fabulous time.

We played casino, gambled card games like poker, blackjack and craps and laughed and ate fantastic foods, prepared by some of the best chef’s in the world, and right on the strip of the gambling city.

I wanted to take my chances on a gigantic dollar slot machine and decided to risk 25.00 dollars of the 200.00 dollars I had to play with for the whole trip. After feeding 17.00 dollars into this huge slot machine I hit 300.00 dollars and I jumped up and down and laughed so much, a casino attendant came over and offered my friends and me a free tickets to a show with vouchers for two complimentary drinks. We were in an element of surprise, appreciation and realized that it would be a gambling and adventure trip not forgotten. ″Casino City″, I love you.

Blackjack Dealer Training

April 14th, 2009

Aspiring casino dealers can get their blackjack dealer training from various gaming schools in the US that employ licensed instructors to teach gaming procedures. Most students usually choose one or two games to specialize in, and learn the particulars of that game.

Most gaming schools offer flexible schedules, and often offer day or evening classes depending on the demands of the students. Admission fees for blackjack dealer classes depend on the length of the class and game procedures taught. The cost might vary from $500 for a short session to $2,000 or more for extensive craps training.

Although there are no enrollment requirements for blackjack dealer training, some states have their own rules and regulations. For instance, in Nevada enrollees must be at least 21 years old by the date they are scheduled to graduate from the dealer school. Similarly, New Jersey dealing schools also follow the 21-year age guidelines. Therefore, it is advisable to enquire about the age requirements before enrolling into gaming schools. You can search online to find professional dealing schools in your neighborhood, and can contact these schools directly to find information about the various classes provided and their course fees.

Most blackjack dealing courses cover all aspects of dealing and also offer intensive courses in poker and craps. Some gaming schools create an atmosphere similar to that of a real casino by using authentic tables, chips, and other professional equipment commonly utilized in the gaming industry.

Learning blackjack dealing from a gaming school is not a must, as casinos do not necessarily require you to attend a private dealer school. However, these courses help students gain knowledge and skills to be employed in a casino, and managers often prefer to hire someone capable of dealing in a professional manner.

California Casinos

April 11th, 2009

The state of California, located on the west coast of the United States, is by far the most populous state in the country. There are also a number of California casinos operating within the legal jurisdictions of its Native American owned lands. Because they are located on Native American land, many California casinos are located in out-of-the-way places. When visiting a California casino, it is advisable to call ahead and get specific directions.

Nearly all California casinos are open 24 hours a day. California casinos are allowed to offer electronic gaming machines, blackjack, and other card games. Unfortunately, the games of craps and roulette are not permitted, but some California casinos offer modified forms of these games that are played with cards rather than dice or roulette wheels. Slots, video poker and video keno are the most popular electronic gaming machines you'll find in California casinos. Some of the card games frequently played in California casinos include blackjack, baccarat, poker (including pai gow, Caribbean stud and three-card poker), Spanish 21, and Let it Ride. Many California casinos also feature bingo, casino war and OTB (off track betting) options for gamblers and casual players.

In addition to traditional gambling games, many California casinos offer some exciting and unusual amenities. For example, the Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino in Lakeside has a full 18-hole golf course and a wedding chapel. Visitors to the Konocti Vista Casino Resort & Marina, also in Lakeside, can take in a marina with 80 ships. The Win-River Casino in Redding features a comedy club and an entertainment center. Relax at the Cache Creek Indian Bingo & Casino in Brooks with a full-service spa. California casinos are as varied and colorful as the residents of California themselves, and many of them are full of surprises!

Several California casinos allow overnight RV parking for the traveling gambler, so if you're planning a California casino trip you can make quite a few stops and stay a while. Age restrictions at California casinos are 18 and up except where liquor is served, in which case it's 21 and up. Other California casinos include the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, the Mono Wind Casino in Auberry, the River Rock Casino in Geyserville, the Palace Indian Gaming Center in Lemoore, the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, the Black Bart Casino in Willits, the Lucky 7 Casino in Smith River, and many more!

Make Money From Gambling, Without Gambling - 30 Ways

April 9th, 2009

1. Own a casino.

2. Own stock in a casino company.

3. Own complementary businesses (such as bars, restaurants, pawn shops etc) near a casino.

4. Act in commercials for gambling.

My mother has made more net profit from gambling than most gamblers even though she has never stepped inside a casino or even bought a lotto ticket. As a local actress she was paid well to make two local gambling TV ads — one for the Missouri Lottery and one for The Alton Belle Casino.

5. Own land a gambling company wants to build a casino on.

6. Be a lawyer for casinos.

But be careful, not like St. Louis rainmaker Michael Lazaroff, who allegedly took money from a local casino, under illegal conditions.

7. Work as a casino employee.

8. Provide consulting services to casinos. If you know how to improve casino security or how to convince gamblers to spend more money, casinos may pay you well to enhance their bottom lines. Some former professional gamblers, such as Steve Forte, do this.

9. Be a city or state government with casinos in your taxing jurisdiction.

East St. Louis Illinois has been collecting its garbage and paying its city employees ever since The Casino Queen set down anchor on the East Side riverfront.

10. Sell your own how-to-win books, newsletters, magazines, columns, tapes and software.

11. Sell other people’s how-to-win books etc. From your local B. Dalton to The Gambler’s Bookshop in Las Vegas to various Internet sites.

12. Be a fulltime anti-gambling activist who is good at raising funds to fight the self-righteous war against gambling by lobbying against it.

13. Be a counselor or therapist who specialises in treating gambling ″addicts.″

14. Live in a gambling tourist spot.

15. Sell space on your website to banners linking to casinos.

16. Run a fax news service to keep gamblers up to the minute on casino conditions.

In 1995, Stanford Wong notified all his subscribers that The Alton Belle was about to run a holiday special and pay two dollars for one on blackjacks. A swarm of Vegas card counters who’d never before heard of Alton Illinois rented a bus and crowded out the local bettors the casino had intended to reward.

17. Buy antique slot machines as a collector.

18. Buy and sell antique slot machines as a dealer.

19. Be a politician receiving campaign contributions from local casinos.

This is not legal in Missouri but according to local newspaper stories, allegedly did not stop former St. Louis mayor Clarence Harmon from doing it.

20. Be a TV station, radio station, newspaper, magazine etc that runs gambling related stories, especially horror stories that blame casinos for the suicides of gamblers and the corruption of local lawyers and politicians.

21. Be a TV station, radio station, newspaper, billboard, magazine etc that accepts and runs advertising from casinos.

22. If you are not required to file a tax return (for instance, your only income is some form of nontaxable welfare), go to casinos and race tracks and when a taxpayer wins an amount large enough that the track or casino must report it to the IRS, volunteer to accept the winnings for them, for a fee of course.

Since you don’t pay taxes anyway, you’re safe. The taxpayer saves the approximately 40% of the winnings the federal and state government would want from them.

For a $2500 slots jackpot, that’s $1000 in taxes, so it’s certainly worth it for the taxpayer winner to pay you $200 to put your name and Social Security number on the money.

In case you haven’t guessed, this is illegal. It could be charged as conspiring to evade taxes. I do not recommend it.

23. Cheat the casino.

Also illegal and not recommended, but people do it. No telling how many people get away with it, since they may get caught next week. Also, casinos lump real cheating in with advantage winning techniques.

24. Work for state and local gambling regulatory agencies.

25. Own a store or gas station which sells lottery tickets. You get a percentage of the winnings of tickets sold at your store.

26. Work for a store or gas station which sells lottery tickets. The store’s lottery income helps provide your paycheck. Also, I’ve heard that a supermarket in nearby Godfrey Illinois sent its employees on a trip after a jackpot winner bought their ticket at that store (so Illinois also paid the store a substantial portion of the pot.)

Now you know why when you buy a lottery ticket the clerk tells you, ″Good luck.″

27. Work for a company that makes gambling equipment and supplies, such as Bee card decks, chips, roulette wheels etc.

28. Walk through casinos looking for freebies. Slots players actually walk away from millions of dollars of machine credit annually. Find such an empty machine, play the credits and keep any winnings.

I’ve heard that this is now illegal in Las Vegas, probably because casinos there had too many street people wandering through doing this, probably bothering some of the tourists.

Similarly, I’ve also heard that some sharp-eyed folk walk over race track grounds looking for discarded but winning tickets.

I can’t laugh — I hate to admit it, but I once threw away a $50 winning scratch off lottery ticket, because I didn’t understand until later that I’d won.

29. Be a bookie.

If you do this right, you are NOT gambling. You are managing risk so that you make money no matter who wins the game.

30. Sell your opinion as to horse and dog race winners or winners of ball games. Many hustlers sell tip sheets at race tracks. Others give out their sports betting advice via 900 numbers.

THE MAN WITH $100,000 BREASTS by Michael Konik has a chapter on a man who sold ball game winners via a 900 number, based on picks by his five year old son.

Be especially careful of anyone soliciting you via mail order. There is a classic scam technique using mail order.

At the beginning of the football season, they buy a list of 1,000,000 names and addresses of known sports bettors and advice buyers. They write a great sales letter describing what a terrific sports handicapper they are. To prove it, they predict the winner of the first prominent game of the season.

Let’s say it’s team A against Team B. They print up two versions of the sales letter. One predicts Team A will win. The other one predicts Team B.

They send half the mailing list the Team A winner letter, the other half the Team B winner letter.

After the game, they discard the 500,000 names who received the losing team will win letter.

Repeat the process every week. By the end of the NFL season they have only 10,000 names left, but those people think the scammer is a sports handicapping genius. They’ve seen the ″handicapper″ accurately predict the winner of one game a week since the beginning of the season. What a track record!

A few weeks before the Super Bowl the con artist sends the remaining names a letter saying they will tell them the name of their pick to win the Super Bowl, for a mere $1000.

As soon as the first flurry of checks and money orders clears, they close their bank account and the Post Office box and take a cab to the airport.

They watch the Super Bowl in a hotel room in Brazil.
